whale watching, pronounced the ocean empty, packed away my binoculars and
sloped off home. As soon as Tony Blair decided to go, I wrote that a
leadership election should and must take place. It didn’t. Was I deterred?
No, I predicted the rumbles were set to grow. All through 2008 and 2009 I
wrote excited columns whenever the embers of mutiny against the Prime
Minister looked close to sparking into life. I backed Alan Johnson, David
Miliband ... anyone, because the logic of unseating this deadbeat looked so
strong.
