West Palm Beach Nearly 3,500 tons of rubbish were picked up from oceans
and rivers around the world in only one day last year, including 1.3 million
cigarette butts in the US, 19,500 fishing nets in Britain and 11,000 nappies
in the Philippines. The 400,000 volunteers who took part in Ocean
Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup also found more than
440 animals caught up – 175 of which were dead or dying, including a seal
entangled in fishing line in California, a hammerhead shark caught in line
in Florida, a sea turtle tangled up in rope in Ghana and a penguin in wire
in Rio de Janeiro. The next cleanup is on September 19. (AP)
