It may boast the footballers’ enclaves of Bothwell and Uddingston, but Lanarkshire’s housing market has taken a kicking. The value of North Lanarkshire’s residential sales fell by £64m — or 61% — in the year to June, according to Registers of Scotland. South Lanarkshire’s sales receipts were down by £147m or 58%. A rash of estate agency closures confirmed the impression that this key commuter county has been hit harder than most by the downturn and a squeeze on mortgage lending.
