I forget the exact year when it became a status symbol to have a second home
in Venice. Perhaps 1600, when Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice was first
published? Owning a flat in the city can certainly complicate your life:
just ask a Venetian. While you’re at it, ask him what it’s like to try to
restore a house: it’s always a revelation to see a grown man burst into
tears.
