Claire Danes is way blonder than I expected. To the point where, walking into
the studio where the Style team is on the final shot of the day, her
sex-bomb tresses are the first thing I see. It’s a proper look-at-me blonde,
and, supine on the floor, back arched, lithe dancer’s legs holding a pose in
the air, the hair spilling across her face, Danes is sex in a pair of
dungarees. (“I feel like a chic farmer,” she exclaims.) It’s something of a
revelation. Serious and studious, she is “the girl from Romeo + Juliet” (as
everybody seems to remember her), who does Shakespeare, but who doesn’t
particularly do the whole film-star thing. And while she also does scandal
(she was branded a homewrecker five years ago when her co-star Billy Crudup
left his seven months’ pregnant girlfriend, Mary-Louise Parker, for her),
she has never seemed like the kind of girl to court tabloid attention. As
such, it’s hard to know quite where to place her.
