As I sit finishing Kate Clanchy’s book, I am abruptly aware that my cleaning lady is mopping my kitchen floor. Moreover I sting with guilt that, although she has worked in my home for eight years, we have rarely spoken, indeed I struggle to recall which South American country she comes from or even her second name.
